Author Marcelle Pick is an OB/GYN NP and co-founder of the Women to Women clinic located in Yarmouth, Maine. From the clinic, she also co-founded the Women to Women Personal program (Website: www.womentowomen.com). I regularly review this site and find it so informative and great. Marcelle has written many other books prior to this one. Is It Me Or My Hormones is her latest book in her series and just recently made its debut in February 2013. She has many speaking engagements under her belt and regularly appears on PBS stations. I recently viewed a PBS broadcast where she was promoting this current book and she is such a great speaker, grabs your attention.
I have never read any of her books until now, but as mentioned before, I regularly view the Women to Women website which is full of useful information and subscribe to the online newsletter. Through the website women can get a customized program depending on their specific symptoms. I would love to try a personalized plan, but each plan is a bit pricey. So I thought I would try reading this book first and then would love to read some of her prior books. In her books she does promote the personalized program, however, she gives other options for women to customize their own program on their own.
The contents of this book really spoke to me. Each passage I read I could totally relate to and I finally felt like someone totally understood what I was dealing with. The first part of the book has several chapters that totally explain the hormone connections in women’s bodies and how they can get totally out of whack. She uses real life women’s stories as examples of their individual struggles and then explains how she provided solutions and the outcome of each story. Marcelle even goes into her own personal story of hormonal struggles. I found a lot of comfort in reading all these chapters and it made me feel not quite like such a freak, as I have on many occasions. The second part of the book devotes several chapters to completely outlining her “Four Week Plan For Hormonal Health”. Her program relies on all drug free natural elements, supplements, therapies. She emphasizes physical activity and relaxation methods. The main focus is on diet and she provides a specific eating plan and recipes. The main idea behind the diet is elimination of foods containing gluten and dairy, and giving up sugar and sugar substitutes. She swears that with this type of eating plan, many hormonal conditions will simply just go away.
I am in the process of trying the diet, although it does take quite a bit of organization and planning to go on the diet. Gluten free diets have become quite the rage in the last few years and there are many products available now on the market. Still, it is quite a challenge to come up with additional menu ideas especially when you have a family that you need to cook for as well. Adding to that the elimination of dairy and sugar, you often wonder what is left to eat. So I am embarking on this 4 week journey and will post updates about it. Marcelle stresses that making too many changes at one time can be difficult, so she suggests just making a few changes at first and then adding more later on. So I will start with the diet aspect and see how that goes.
Even though I have not tried out the program yet, I highly recommend this book. It was easy and fun reading, I read the book in 2 days. Also, her words provide so much comfort and encouragement. I plan to purchase her other books soon as well. Happy reading.
